When I head to the spa for a full day of relaxation, one of the things I look forward to besides the relaxing massage is sitting in the sauna. I always enjoy detoxing in the heat of the sauna after a relaxing massage. There is something exciting about the cleansing and renewing of your body.
I always get sad when I notice a spa location or hotel spa does not include a sauna. There are so many easy sauna options to sit in the smallest places or set up exactly how you would like, so adding a sauna can be easy and an exciting addition.
With all of the amazing health benefits of the sauna, it is the perfect thing to add to allow your clients to experience the most relaxing and fulfilling experience at your spa. I always try to use the sauna for approximately 10 minutes at a time, depending on how I feel and my temperature. I also always advise take a shower upon exiting the sauna to rinse away the toxins off my skin, since the sauna helps expel toxins in your body out through your pores.
There are so many great sauna options in all different shapes, sizes and kinds to fit your needs and what will best benefit your customers. The two main types of saunas are dry and wet. Wet saunas, otherwise known as steam rooms, are kept at lower temperatures to prevent superheated water from scalding the skin on contact. Dry saunas are kept at much higher temperatures by keeping the moisture levels down to close to zero. These extreme temperatures cause relaxation and promote sweating to help cleanse the system and provide health benefits. These dry saunas are the types I would suggest for the majority of spas. Larger spas can have both options.
Infrared saunas are the most popular as the infrared technology produces heat through electromagnetic radiation heaters. One of the reasons infrared saunas are gaining popularity is because of the lower air temperature which is easier to tolerate. Especially in the case of first time users, infrared provides the same sauna benefits of a traditional version, without the intense and sometimes unbearable heat and thick air.

How to Use Your Sauna
You finally made the best decision of your life…to get your own sauna. Good for you! The relaxation and major health benefits of infrared saunas are amazing. Once you get the sauna and set it up in your house, you begin to wonder how to use it and how to increase the benefits of your sauna sessions. SaunasAndStuff.com is here to help.
- Always remember to drink plenty of fluids before, during and after your sauna session. Drinking plenty of water after will help your body eliminate all of the toxins from the sauna session.
- Heat the sauna to the desired temperature. You will want to do this up to 30 minutes before you plan to use it so it is warm and ready when you are. The most common temperatures for beginners are in the range of 110° F to 118° F. You can experiment to find what is most comfortable for you.
- Some people enjoy working out prior to using the sauna to get their blood flowing. If you exercise prior to using the sauna, monitor your body to make sure you do not overheat, since you will already be warm prior to entering.
- You can start with one or two sauna sessions per week and work up from there. Start with 15 to 20 minutes and gradually increase this time with future sessions as desired.
- Wear as little clothing as possible to get the best infrared sauna benefits and feel the most comfortable. Infrared rays have difficulty penetrating clothing. You should take two towels in the sauna. One will be used to sit on, and the other can be used to wipe away any sweat.
- Use this sauna session to relax, meditate and escape. Relieving stress and tension is one of the sauna’s major benefits! You can massage the areas of your body that ache to relieve sore and tense muscles. From time to time throughout the session, wipe off excess perspiration to allow for more intense sweating.
- If at any time during your sauna session you feel dizzy, sleepy or any discomfort, exit the sauna immediately.
- After your sauna session is complete, turn off the power and sit in the sauna with the door opened slightly for about 10 minutes to let you your body cool down.
- Take a shower to clean the toxins from your body. It is best to wait 15 to 20 minutes before taking a warm shower to rinse the perspiration from your body so you can fully cool down and finish sweating prior to your shower.

Buying a Sauna to Help with New Years Resolutions
Each New Year we examine our lives to figure out the things we want to change and write a list to start overhauling everything right after that ball drops and we fight off any pending hangovers. Have you ever thought that buying a sauna might help you achieve some of those goals?
Weight Loss with Saunas
Saunas can be amazing partners to help you achieve your weight loss goals. One sauna session can help you burn more than 600 calories, which is equivalent to 30 minutes of rowing at the gym or an hour on the treadmill. The heat from the infrared sauna penetrates below the skin to break down the fat and water particles in your skin, helping to burn calories and accelerate weight loss. It is a great alternative to physical exercise for those who are unable to exert themselves.
Expel Toxins with Saunas
At most spas, you will find hot tubs and saunas as a fixture. Besides relaxation, these devices help expel toxins from your skin. When toxins are present in our body, blood circulation is blocked and cellular energy is impaired. The body’s immune system is inhibited due to toxins, making it difficult to fight disease. When infrared sauna heat is applied, the large water molecules in our bodies that contain toxic gases like sulfur dioxide, carbon dioxide, lead, mercury and chlorine vibrate are broken down. The encapsulated toxic materials and gases are then released, expelling these toxins. Some experts in weight loss believe our bodies use fat to dilute toxins. Since infrared saunas excel at helping rid your body of toxins, you are burning fat that is being used to dilute toxins in the process.
Saunas Help Relieve Pain from New Years Work Outs
Many people in the New Year head to the gym to work out, lose weight and feel great. By day three, their bodies are sore and in need of heating pads…or saunas. Infrared Saunas are the answer to your prayers. Heat has been shown to reduce pain sensation by direct action on both free-nerve endings in tissues and on peripheral nerves. Many athletes sit in the sauna or hot tub to relieve sore muscles and alleviate pain.
So if you are now beginning to conquer your New Year Resolutions, plan to buy a sauna or hot tub. Buying an infrared sauna or hot rock sauna just might help you get closer to your goals than you ever thought. Add purchasing a sauna from SaunasAndStuff.com to the top of your list.
